It’s the one she created as a senior in a high school cooking class, a mandatory requirement for Japanese girls back then to teach them the skills to become homemakers. Being a diligent student, she received many high marks from her teachers, whose notes appear in red throughout the book. She found she enjoyed cooking and empowered by her teacher's praise; she began preparing the recipes for her parents, specifically her father. When Hideko was in high school, her father was already in his 60’s. The age difference and outlook on life often created tension. While she loved her father, he was a man of few words regularly eating silently. Despite this, the family always ate dinner together. It provided a connection for a young woman to a father, who often worked long hours away from the family as a truck driver and later a taxi driver. She could tell when he enjoyed something she prepared by how quickly he ate and when his plate was clean. It brought her joy to see that when he ate the dishes she made.
